Landmark Mountmellick business of 70 years on the market

A bid onHanlon's shop failed to reach the reserve price

A landmark Mountmellick business which has been owner-run for the past 70 years has come on the market.

Hanlon’s shop on O’Moore Street has a guide price of only €175,000, which auctioneer Matt Dunne said represents the price of a good 3 bed semi house.

“Hanlon’s shop on O’Moore Street in Mountmellick is part of the fabric and folklore of the town. It has been a hub of activity since the 1940s,” Mr Dunne said.

“Ten years ago it was a very popular watering hole for discreet imbibers, with its select lounge at the rear of the premises,” Mr Dunne said.

“Its loyal customers still love the fact that you can fill up with petrol or diesel while still availing of the quick and handy convenience store,” he added.

Mr Dunne stressed that the grocery shop has everything, including off licence. The recent arrival of the lotto has attracted a lot of new customers, he said.

“Of course the presence of spacious residential quarters on the first floor ensures the new buyer will have a place to sleep,” he said.

He noted that the turnover of the shop has remained steady for the last 3 years at approximately €1,200,000 or c. €25,000 per week.

While the premises is structurally sound, Mr Dunne said it could be modernised. A communal entrance leads to a large back garden.

The title is freehold and the premises enjoys a good location just off the town’s main street.

Auction

The premises is for sale by Public Auction on March 28 th at 3pm in the Gandon Inn, Emo.
