Former Laois star Billy Sheehan was on the scoresheet as St Jude’s made a winning start to the Dublin senior football championship last night.
The former Emo player is in his third season with the side who reached the semi-final last year and he kicked a point in a 1-20 to 0-6 win over Naomh Mearnog.
St Jude’s, who fell to Castleknock in the last four of this competition in 2016, were streets ahead a Naomh Mearnog outfit that offered very little resistance.
Cork senior panellist Niall Coakley, who Sheehan coaches at intercounty level, kicked 0-7 while Dublin forward Kevin McManamon posted four points as St Jude’s avoided a drop into the Senior ‘B’ championship.
In the evening’s other games, Kilmacud Crokes secured an eye-catching 10-12 to 0-7 win over Erins Isle, while St Mary’s defeat Whitehall Colmcille by eight points.
Parnells and Final Ravens drew 2-10 apiece and will go to a replay to decide who advances.
There will be further Laois interest tomorrow night when John O’Loughlin’s St Brigids take on St Peregrines in the first round.
