Gardaí are calling on vehicle owners not to leave items visible in unattended cars after a number of vehicles were broken into in recent days across the county.

Two of these took place in Portlaoise on Monday while another incident occurred in Stradbally that evening.

The first occurred at 1am when a jeep was broken into at Cosby Avenue. The front passenger window of the vehicle was smashed. A number of personal items were taken from the vehicle.

At 4pm a man returning to his car at the Bridge Street Centre found it had been broken into as the rear window had been broken. A number of items were also taken from it.

Meanwhile, in Cill Beg Manor in Stradbally, a number of cars were broken into in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A Garda spokesperson said: “The simple message is not to leave anything at all in your car.

“These people will break into your car if they see a cable for a phone charger in the hope that a phone may be there.

“They will even break in if they see two euro lying somewhere. So make sure you take everything out of your car before you get secure it.”

Anyone with any information on any of these crimes is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station at 057 86 74100.
