Calls for on the spot fines to move temporary dwellers

On the spot fines for road side dwellers

A Laois County Councillor has called for on the spot fines to be issued to those who set up temporary dwellings.

The comments, made by Cllr Aidan Mullins, came following a discussion at a recent Municipal meeting where Cllr John Moran informed the delegates that temporary dwellings had been set up on the New Road in Graiguecullen.

He said: “Some people have come in and just pulled up on the side of the road.

“They are causing problems to local business premises, especially the nearby driving range.”

Cllr Ben Brennan said: “Nobody ever seems to take responsibility for this. The guards say that it isn’t their job.

“It’s a fabulous housing estate there and they think that just because they have a relation living in the housing estate that they can just move in like that.”

Cllr Tom Mulhall informed the meeting a similar problem once existed on The Heath but the Office Of Public Works, who owned the lands, served the dwellers with a summons and gardaí moved them on.

Cllr Aidan Mullins said that this approach should be applied in the Graiguecullen case.

He said: “That should be the same with Laois County Council, who are the landowners there in Graiguecullen.

“If on the spot fines were served, that would soon enough sort them out.”
