Road closed after accident involving cattle truck

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run

A road in Mountmellick remains closed following a traffic accident involving a cattle truck earlier this morning.

The accident occurred close to the Rock NS, just outside Mountmellick town.

It happened shortly after 8am this morning.

No other vehicles are understood to have been involved.

It is believed that the trailer of the cattle truck became detached while driving past the primary school.

Up to five cattle had to be put down due to their injuries, according to the Leinster Express.

The road between the junction at Portarlington Road and Kennels Cross Road remains closed.

The driver of the truck is not believed to have been injured. Gardai remain on the scene and diversions are in place.
