Laois women behind foster care service for dogs

Check out just some of the animals at the Cara Rescue Dogs adoption day on Sunday in Pet World in the Laois Shopping Centre.

Cara Rescue Dogs – a voluntary group based in Laois – has approximately 90 dogs in its care at the moment in various foster homes around the country.

People wishing to adopt a dog from Cara must fill out an application form and then are subject to a home check. If everything is approved then they can pick out a dog most suitable to them.

Cara host regular events like the one on Sunday where people can come look at the dogs. This time they had 12-15 dogs at it and two found new homes.

Lorraine McEvoy – along with fellow Laois women Karla Mitchell and Lorna Dunne – set up the group in 2011. They have re-homed over 1000 dogs since setting up and provide 24/7 phone support.

All three work full-time as well as providing this service. “We give preference to sick, injured and vulnerable dogs,” says Lorraine, who named the group after her own childhood dog Cara.

“There is a serious problem with the over-breeding of dogs in this country and I could tell you horror stories all day long.

“There is a constant waiting list of dogs looking for homes and even if everyone was to stop breeding dogs now it would take a couple of years to re-home all the dogs in this country.”
