Ruby sets a new record as Laois athletes impress at Leinster Track & Field

A great day’s action took place on Saturday in Day 1 of the Leinster Athletics Juvenile Track and Field.

The throwers were represented by Gerard Kelly (St Abban’s), who won U-18 Hammer. His clubmates Eadaoin Cody won gold in Girls U-15 Hammer, Nicole Keogh-Dowling won gold in Girls U-17 Shot Putt, and Tom Buggy won silver in Boys U-17 Shot.

Jumpers were represented by Laura Graham, winning Gold in Girls U-19 Triple Jump, Eoin Keenan (Emo-Rath), who set a new PB of 6.13m when winning silver in U-18 Long Jump. Dervla Scully (Oughaval AC) improved on last year’s medal performance, winning silver in Girls U-18 High Jump clearing 1.55m, Matthew Rossiter (St Abban’s), 2nd in U-18 Triple Jump and Aoife Gallagher (St Abban’s) winning bronze in Girls U-15 Triple Jump.

However the star of the show was Ruby Millet (St Abban’s), winning Girls U-17 High Jump with 1.60m and setting a new Leinster record by winning Long Jump in 5.96m

On the track, Gillian Keenan (Emo-Rath) won Silver in U-18 Hurdles, Canice Whearty Oughaval won Bronze in U-16 Hurdles, Elaine Daly (Emo-Rath) won Bronze in 100m and Grainne Lawlor (Rosenallis-Kilcavan) won her first Leinster athletics medal, claiming bronze in the 200m.

Once again, there was a star performer with Cian Kelly (St Abban’s), leading the 800m from gun to tape, winning in about 1:58

The day concluded with four Laois teams winning medals in inter county 4x100m relays.
