Three Vikings appeared in Portlaoise, Mountmellick and Portarlington libraries today.

Armed with swords and axes, they were ready to show how they lived, the games they played and all their gold jewellery for Laois Heritage Week.

The Vikings came down from the Fingal Living History Society and had three stations set up in each of the libraries.

The first station had Viking games that the children could play. The second showed all their weapons and children could make gold coins and see jewellery at the third station.

Head of Portlaoise library Susan Carroll was delighted with the visit from the Vikings.

“It was extremely interactive. It’s good to see the children learning and having fun at the same time. Of course when the boys saw the weapons they went straight over to them!” she said.

The Viking experience was part of Laois Heritage Week which is on from Saturday 19 August to Sunday 27 August. The week is full of activities like workshops, displays, films, walk, talks and re-enactments, with a huge focus on family-friendly events.
