Man to face burglary charges following Mountrath armed raid

A man is due before court later today on robbery, burglary and threat to kill charges following a number of incidents in Mountrath in which a filling station was raided, a shot was fired, and a car was hijacked.

Gardaí investigating the incident in which a firearm was discharged following the armed robbery at a filling station on the Portlaoise Road, Mountrath Co Laois have arrested a 31 year old in connection with this investigation.

The incident occurred at approximately 12.35am on Saturday the 19th August, 2017 following an armed robbery at the filling station.

The incident happened at the well-known and very busy Emo Oil filling station, Mighty Mols, on the Portlaoise Road in Mountrath.

A man entered a filling station wearing a balaclava threatened a staff member with a firearm and made off with an amount of cash. A firearm and cash was later recovered.

The raider made his escape by car. However, it is understood that he crashed while in his getaway car but another vehicle was hijacked.

However, this also subsequently also crashed.

The collision occurred at 12.35am outside a house at Derrykearn, near Abbeyleix
A 31 year old man is expected to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate St, Dublin 8 this morning, Thursday 24th August 2017 charged in connection with this investigation.
