Students show support as Sleep out for Simon approaches

Storm Brian won’t deter the determined participants from taking part in the Sleep Out for Simon in O’Moore Park on Friday night but an international shinty event has ruled out some of the Laois hurlers!

Ross King and Enda Rowland have been big supporters of the event but they will be playing for Ireland in a shinty competition against Scotland in Inverness and can’t make the event.

“A total of 430 sponsorship cards have gone out and we have got a huge response from secondary schools,” said chairperson of Laois Friends of Midlands Simon Michael Martin.

Participants will be taking part in the event from Mountrath Community College, Colaiste Iosagain in Portarlington and Heywood Community School.

“Last year there was one bus load of students, but this year there will be three. It should be great craic,” Mr Martin said.

Support

He thanked the Irish Prison Service for their support, with food being supplied from them, as well as all the cardboard that the participants will be sleeping on.

“This is our main fundraising event to raise funds to provide emergency accommodation in Portlaoise and assisted living in Tullamore.

“Last year we raised €33,000. If we get €20,000 this year we will be delighted,” he said.

Simon currently has 30 clients on their books in the Laois area.

Over 200 people joined on the night in Portlaoise last year, and there is every reason to believe this year will be just as successful.

Registration will take place at 9 pm on Friday night.

All that is required for fundraising participants are a sleeping bag, pillow, warm clothes and a hot water bottle if desired.

Anyone with a musical talent is asked to take instruments along for a sing along session that will take place on the night from 11pm until 12.30am.
