Met Eireann issues weather warnings as Storm Brian approaches

We simply just cannot catch a break at the moment!

Only four days after Hurricane Ophelia wreaked havoc on the country, another Atlantic storm is heading our way.

Storm Brian, described by some as a ‘weather bomb’, is set to batter Ireland with gale force winds and torrential rain.

Met Eireann issued a number of weather alerts ahead of the storm’s arrival.

A status orange wind warning – Met Eireann’s second highest – for southwestern coastal counties comes into force on Saturday.

Counties Mayo, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Waterford and Wexford could be hit by gusts of up to 130km/h.

Met Eireann say: “A rapidly deepening depression in the mid-Atlantic – Storm Brian – is expected to fill as it tracks over parts of Ireland overnight Friday and early on Saturday.

“In general, the winds in most parts of the country will not be as severe as on Monday.

“Yellow wind warnings are in effect countrywide, with orange level warnings for coastal areas of the south and west.

“Various parts of the country will experience strong winds at different times during this period, with northern counties probably not encountering peak winds until Saturday afternoon.”

And a Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the entire country with gusts of up to 110kmh forecast – and going higher in coastal parts of the south and west.

Although the winds will not be as strong as what Ophelia brought, there is a risk that trees and other things may have become loose from Monday.

Therefore, even these lower powered winds could take them out.

The bad weather is also likely to hamper the work of the ESB crews who are currently working to restore power to people who lost it on Monday following Hurricane Ophelia.

So all in all, this is certainly not a good situation.
