Calls for a pedestrian crossing in Portlaoise
Road safety measures and flashing lights have been sought

A pedestrian crossing should be installed at the top of the Summerhill Estate in Portlaoise, a council meeting has heard.

Labour Cllr Noel Tuohy says that it is an ‘accident waiting to happen’ as kids are crossing the road in their hundreds.

He said: “I’d be very concerned about this crossing as it is very dangerous.

“Only just in the last 12 months was there a serious accident. A man was lucky to be alive and he spent months in hospital.

“The residents have been on to me about this for a long time now.

“We were up there one day this week and as the kids were going by the top of the road, it is crazy.

“There was scores of kids just skipping by. And I hate to say it but I think it is an accident waiting to happen.

“So I really think it should be prioritized because you have hundreds of kids passing by and it is a blind spot.”

Council Engineer Wes Wilkinson said they would take a look and see what could be done.

He said: “This will be examined as part of the overall traffic management upgrades in this area.”
