Fire services called to Portlaoise school overnight

The Laois County Fire and Rescue Services attended a fire at the old St Paul’s primary school on the Borris Road in Portlaoise late on Friday night.

The fire at the school building, which is no longer in use following the relocation to the new Holy Family premises in Aughnaharna in September, was attended to by local services at about 9.30pm.

It’s understood there were no injuries.

Gardai are appealing for information and can be contacted in Portlaoise on 057 8674100.

Meanwhile, Gardai in Portarlington are appealing for information regarding any suspicious activity following the burglary of a gun, safe and firearms from a house on Bishopswood Road in the town on Wednesday evening.

The robbery took place between 7-8pm and Gardai are particularly interested in the movements of a large, dark-coloured estate-type car.

The incident in Portarlington follows on from other robberies in the county on Tuesday night.
