Disappointment at lack of funding for busy Heywood road

There was widespread disappointment at the lack of funding to upgrade the approach road to Heywood College from Ballypickas Cross at the recent Portlaoise Municipal District.

Engineer Wes Wilkinson said that while he has investigated getting funding from the Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport, “this funding mechanism was suspended four-five years ago.”

The proposal for an upgrade was raised by councillor Mary Sweeney.

Cllr Sweeney said, “I am extremely disappointed that funding was suspended. There are almost 700 pupils back and forth on that road twice a day.”

“It is extremely busy. The astroturf in Heywood is also used in the evenings,” said cllr Sweeney.

“This is quite urgent – we can’t wait for an accident to happen,” she added.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly said, “The amount of traffic is colossal. This upgrade needs to be done.”
