In our ‘That was My Year’ series, we sit down with promiment Laois people in their respective fields and ask them about their highs and lows of 2017, and what hopes they have for 2018.

Killeshin man and Laois Football Captain Stephen Attride sat down to talk about being captain, injuries and his hopes for Laois in 2018.

2017

1. What was your personal highlight of 2017?

Being made captain was a huge honour. Unfortunately the year didn’t go as we had planned but hopefully 2018 will bring success.

2. Anything you would like to change from 2017?

I had a number of ankle injuries during the year so hopefully I can avoid injury in 2018.

3. Favourite moment of 2017? (apart from own personal activity)

Winning a Club Championship game with Killeshin is always special.

4. Worst moment of 2017?

Losing to Offaly which resulted in relegation.

5. Best learning experience from 2017?

The Championship loss to Clare is still fresh in the mind. That was a hugely disappointing result and we need to learn from our mistakes in that game.

The Future

1. What would be the one thing you would like to change in 2018?

Restore some pride in Laois football. Football is at quite a low ebb at the minute in Laois and hopefully we can get the Laois public excited about their football team again.

2. If you could attend any event in 2018 what would it be?

The World Cup Final in Russia.

3. What would you like to achieve in 2018?

Promotion from Division 4 has to be the primary goal.

4. Where do you hope to see yourself at the end of 2018?

I hope that the Laois Senior Football Team can fulfil their potential and that I am a part of that journey.

5. What would be your own personal motto to see you through 2018?

“Be the best version of you.”

6. Young sportsperson to look out for in 2018?

Colm Murphy is a super talent and if he can keep injury free in 2018 he has the potential to have a great year for Laois.
