The Sunday Interview: Bernard O’Shea chats everything Dancing with the Stars

Bernard O'Shea

Legendary Laois comedian Bernard O’Shea spoke to LaoisToday about training for Dancing with the Stars (DWTS), shuffling at his wedding and who he reckons will take home the DWTS Glitterball trophy.

The Breakfast Republic presenter said he was feeling ,”nervous, very, very nervous” about his appearance on DWTS.

“Dancing is my fear! I’ve never danced before, not even on my wedding day. I just shuffled about. My wife Lorna was a bit annoyed about that on the day.”

When asked about why he decided to do it, the Durrow man said, “I asked myself that everyday! I was unsure at first, but Jennifer Zamparelli (co-star of Bridget and Eamon and Breakfast Republic), said that I should get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.

“I always make New Year’s resolutions and find them hard to stick to, but this is so different and I’m having great craic. I can’t believe I’m enjoying it so much. I’m so glad I did now.

The first dance

He also revealed what tune he’ll be moving to on Sunday night.

“The first dance is the tango. It’s taking me ages to learn it. I still don’t know it. Hopefully I know it by Sunday night. I am by far the weakest, I think everyone is good compared to me,” he said.

The Durrow man might be just a tad modest though, considering all the hours he’s put in.

“I get up at 5.30am for the Breakfast Republic. I’m there from 6.30am to 10.30am and start dancing at 11. We get a lunch break and finish at 4.”

Bernard will be dancing with last year’s winning pro-dancer Valeria Milova.

So who would Bernard back as the favourite, apart from himself of course.

“Rob Heffernan is brilliant. Marty Morrissey is a smooth mover as well. Anna Geary is very good and Tomas O’Leary is a dark horse.”

Bernard also has another role on his hands, being father to three year old daughter Olivia and one year old son Tadhg.

“The dad thing for me is almost a break! I love it,” he said.

So whether it be dancing, presenting or working on the new series of Bridget and Eamon, this Laois man is proving to be master at whatever craft he puts his name to.

Bernard will be showcasing his dance moves on Dancing with the Stars on RTÉ tonight at 6.30pm.
