The shelves of shops and supermarkets around Laois are bare this evening as people scramble to stock up on supplies ahead of the forecasted bad weather.

People headed out in their droves tonight to get essentials such as bread, milk and water.

And rows of shelves were left completely unstocked as a result.

With fears mounting that water pipes may freeze in the coming days, there has been great demand to purchase bottled water.

Manager of Laois Shopping centre Kevin Doyle said that their had been an increase in the number of people shopping today.

Speaking to LaoisToday, he said that Tesco is very well stocked with essential supplies.

However his main concern is the safety of the staff who will be coming and going from work over the coming days.

He said: “Some of the smaller stores have to close, but our main priority is that everyone is safe.”
