Laois TD Sean Fleming has spoken about the new Portlaoise Draft Local Area Plan which is currently being prepared by Laois County Council.

Deputy Fleming highlighted there are many standard features included in these plans by all Local Authorities.

These include housing, parking, traffic and more.

“However, the plan for Portlaoise must take account of the additional special requirements in the town and must be addressed in the new plan,” he said in a statement today.

Deputy Fleming is highlighting three key issues which he believes should be given consideration by Laois County Council.

  • A sustainable Local Health Service to include improved hospital services for the community,
  • An increased emphasis on employment locally to reduce the number of people in Portlaoise commuting out of the town every day to work
  • Improved recreation and community facilities in the town.

“I am calling for joined up thinking between Laois County Council and all Government Agencies to ensure these matters are dealt with.

“Any Portlaoise town plan that does not include these issues cannot be considered a proper plan for all the people in Portlaoise.”
