Unlicensed waste collectors who “advertise on Facebook” are being tracked by Laois County Council.

Engineer Orla Barrett said they are clamping down on the “man with the van”.

“They are advertising on Facebook and we are tracking them,” she said.

Following concerns raised over dumping in serious areas and at bogs, Ms Barrett said they will be working with Coillte and Bord na Mona on the issue.

The meeting heard that 43.96 tonnes of rubbish were disposed of by the council following a clean up of black spot areas for illegal dumping.

Earlier Michael O’Hora, director of services, said they are operating with reduced financial resources and litter and dumping is a “serious financial burden”.

“We are pursuing the perpetrators throughout the county,” he said.

Dedicated

He acknowledged the praise from councillors for the efforts to tackle litter in Laois. “We have a very dedicated staff in the environment section. With your continued support we will continue to do everything we can to address the major issues, which are everywhere around the county,” he said.

The meeting heard that a draft litter plan is currently being prepared, with a pre-consultation period beforehand.

“We are looking for input,” Ms Barrett said. She added that people such as dashboard diners, who eat takeaway food in their car and then dump the wrapping, will be targeted.
