Illegal dumping is a ‘disgraceful eyesore’ in Brockera, Clonaslee and Cush, according to one local councillor at the latest Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District meeting.

Cllr Seamus McDonald made the statement after proposing to erect no dumping signs and CCTV cameras at these locations.

In a written repsonse, SEE Orla Barrett said: “Signage will be erected within the week and the location will be included on the mobile CCTV rota.”

Cllr Brendan Phelan welcomed the introduction of cameras. “Cameras do work. When a builder was caught continuously dumping rubbish, he compensated all works done by the council,” said cllr Phelan.

Director of Services Donal Brennan said that sometimes those caught don’t end up going to court because they pay compensation before this.

In reply to this, cllr James Kelly said that even if they pay compensation, those dumping rubbish should be named and shamed.
