Death of a well-known solicitor and founding member of Portlaoise Rugby Club

The death has taken place of the well known Portlaoise solicitor, Philip Meagher Snr.

Mr Meagher died at the age of 93, today Thursday September 6 at Larchgrove on the Mountrath Road, Portlaoise.

A well-known solicitor in Laois and the midlands area, Mr Meagher was also a founding member of Portlaoise Rugby Club. The Club paid tribute to him in a Facebook post.

“The late Philip Meagher was a founding member of Portlaoise RFC in 1966. He served as President and Trustee for a number of years and became an honorary life member.

“His wise counsel and encouragement along with the late John Hill and Charlie McCormack ensured the club went from strength to strength and they became known as the three wise men. Rarely did he miss an away or home fixture and you could always rely on his support.

Marks of respect

“As a mark of respect Portlaoise RFC grounds and clubhouse will be closed this Saturday, September 8th. All arranged fixtures for Saturday have been cancelled.”

Mr Meagher was predeceased by his wife Noreen and daughter June. He is survived by his family Mary, Joyce, Patricia, Billy, Gerry and Philip, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Reposing is at Keegans Funeral Home, Portlaoise from 4.30pm on Friday with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church to arrive at 6.30pm.

Requiem Mass at 1pm on Saturday followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.
