Music is set to have the county hopping this weekend.  Cherish the Ladies, an Irish-American super group take to the stage in Dunamaise Arts Centre on Saturday night with  instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing. Meanwhile, there’s rock in Kavanagh’s Bar and Venue and guitar playing of the highest calibre in Manhattan Mixer. 

As the seasons are changing there is lots of maintenance needed in the garden. Join Abbeyleix bog for a talk on vegetation management and Fruitlawn Gardens has their annual open day with advice on your autumnal garden. With golf classics, fun days and walks it’s another jam packed weekend.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 13

Alzheimer’s/Dementia Golf Classic

The Heath Golf Club is hosting a golf classic in aid of Alzheimer’s/ Dementia. This is a three person team event of any combination with two scores counting on each hole.  Teams cost €30 with all funds raised going to this great cause. Laois Heritage Presents…

A series of talks continues on Thursday, September 13, 2018 in the Midlands Park Hotel at 8 pm, with a presentation on ‘A Perspective on Early Trade Unionism in Co Laois’ by Francis Devine from the Irish Labour History Society and editor of Saothar.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14

Vendetta Love, Reprisal & Red Sun Alert

Get ready to rock this Friday in Kavanaghs Bar & Venue as Vendetta Love take to the stage.  This local Laois band are really building up a great name and put on a fantastic show.  Influences include Alice in Chains, Guns & Roses , Pearl Jam and many more. Tickets are just €5.00 and doors open at 10pm. 

Mountmellick Camera Club Exhibition

Come along and see the superb work of the Mountmellick Camera Club at their annual exhibition. The Exhibition will open this Friday night in Mountmellick Community College at 8pm-10pm and on Sunday from 2pm-6pm.  Special guest Nicole Turner, Paralympic Swimmer will open the event on Friday night.

SATURDAY  SEPTEMBER 15

Vegetation Management @ Abbeyleix Bog

Abbeyleix bog is a hive of natural wildlife and vegetation. September is a time to review and take stock of the vegetation. This Saturday join the team to help manage areas for pollinators and remove invasive plant species.

It’s a great way to get outdoors and learn about different types of vegetation and their purpose. Come along at 10am. The event is free and more information can be found by emailing here or call 083 1106210.

Slieve Bloom Walk

The next Slieve Bloom guided walk is at Glenbarrow.  It’s a grade A walk which is 10km and will take approx 4 hrs. Meet at 11am at Glenbarrow Car Park. For more information contact Gerry Hanlon  086 8210057 or see here

Cherish the Ladies

This long-running, Grammy-nominated, Irish-American super group was formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene and for more than three decades, these women have toured the world, played the White House and the Olympics and recorded 17 critically acclaimed albums including their latest release, “Heart of the Home”.  

Performing for just one night in the Dunamaise Arts Centre, this is a rare opportunity to see such a spectacular blend of virtuoso instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing. Deuce – Rory Gallagher Tribute

Catch Deuce – the incredible Irish Rory Gallagher tribute band this Saturday in Manhattan Mixer.  This free gig is not to be missed and will suit all the night owls as it kicks off at 12 midnight.  A super gig to rock to into the small hours. 

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9

Fruitlawn Gardens Open Day

Fruitlawn Garden’s Open Day 2018 will host an exceptional range of rare and beautiful plants for sale as well as Arthur’s annual garden tour. The garden will be in its full Autumn splendour with one of the best collections of Asters in flower among many other late summer treasures.

Joining this year with her own stand is Angela Jupe, renowned gardener from Bellefield House in Co.Tipperary. Refreshments will be served. Cost is €5 with children going free. The gardens are open from 10am – 5pm. For more information phone 057 87 30146 / 087 231 8287.

Mountmellick Family Fun Day

Come and join in all the fun and activates at the Mountmellick family fun day. Enjoy face painting, a great choice of games, cake sale and refreshments.  The fun day is in aid of St Martha’s ward, St. Vincent’s Hospital.
