Portlaoise with highest job gains in Ireland outside of Cork and Dublin

There is good news for employment seekers and businesses in Portlaoise as the county town has the third highest level of jobs gains over 10 years.

Figures from the Irish Indepedent show that Portlaoise recorded a gain of 1,855 jobs over the ten-year period, coming second in Leinster and third in Ireland.

Joining the cities in topping the charts

Dublin city and suburbs recorded 34,209 extra jobs while Cork city and suburbs coming in second nationally with 4,995.

The data has been extracted from a comparison of Census 2016 and Census 2006 figures.

No other Laois towns figured on the top five gains or losses as listed in the national newspaper. However, half of Laois towns also failed to regain numbers at work.

The figures also show that the number of people at work remains below pre-Recession levels in more than 70 towns across Ireland, leaving vast portions of rural Ireland behind the economic progress felt by urban areas.
