It’s a busy weekend in Laois! The Ogham Tree Festival is the newest Laois festival and runs this Saturday and Sunday in Stradbally. Stradbally woods and railway will be transformed in to magical place that promises to be a great hit with families of all ages.

Applefest returns to Abbeyleix and is always a great day out and a great way to turn all your apples in to amazing apple juice. P.A.T.H have a fundraiser running on Friday night in Napper Tandy’s in Stradbally and are such a deserving charity.

For the big band experience don’t miss Route 66 in the Dunmaise Arts Centre with music from all the greats over the past 60 years.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 28

PATH Fundraiser – Stradbally

A great night is planned in Napper Tandy’s, Stradbally this Friday night with all the proceeds going to the most deserving charity – P.A.T.H.  Dancing to John Molloy & guests from 9-30pm to 12.30am. Admission is €10 and there will also be a great raffle on the night.

Table Quiz – Mountmellick

Mountmellick Marca are hosting a table quiz on Friday night in the Hollow Bar at 9pm.  It plans to be a great night with lots of prizes to be won. Come along and test your knowledge.

Ogham Festival Saturday 29 & Sunday 30

Our newest Laois festival is a truly magical event for all the family.  Bought to you by the Kiki Theatre group, the Stradbally woodlands will be transformed into a magical place full of creativity, innovation and education.    

Begin with a trip on the Woodland Railway Steam train and enjoy a performance on board by all the woodland creatures. Following your train ride there are lots of activities and surprises to keep all the family entertained.   Enjoy arts, crafts, amazing artisan food and an overall entertaining day.

The day begins at Stradbally Woodland Railway with trains running from Saturday on 10.30am and departs every 20 mins.  For more information see @oghamfestival on facebook or call Jackie 085 8559744.

The Incredibles 2 Movie

See this great movie at the Dunamaise Arts Centre at 2pm. Get there early and get your face painted before the movie. Tickets are just €4.

Route 66 Big Band

It’s always a great night when the Route 66 Big Band come to town.  They will take the Dunamaise audience on a magical musical trip from the ‘40s right up to date with hits made famous by Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Tom Jones, Tina Turner, Van Morrison and many more. Tickets are €20/€18 and the show starts at 8pm.

Abbeyleix Bog – Rhodo Bashing!

If you have a couple of hours to spare this Saturday why not come along and help remove this invasive tree species from the bog.  It’s a great way to get out and about and meet new people while also helping to keep our natural resources flourishing. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 30

St Aengus FC celebrating 50 years

St Aengus FC are celebrating 50 years of soccer with a free family funday in their grounds at Derrycanton, Mountrath at 2pm.
To celebrate, the club will be giving away soccer tickets for the Ireland v Denmark game, as well as a signed Ireland jersey on the day. Lots of fun and games are planned for the day, including soccer blitzes, bouncy castles, lucky dips and spin the wheel.

Applefest

Come along to the community garden in Abbeyleix (entrance beside the Post Office) on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm for the annual Applefest.  The event celebrates all things apples and Autumn. Lots of fresh apple juice for sale on the day. Or if you have lots of apples bring them along and get them pressed for your own apple juice for a small charge.  There will be food stalls, mulled apple juice and fresh pizza cooked in the garden’s own wood fired oven. Pumpkin carving and music and entertainment throughout the day.

Emo Village Farmers Market

Emo’s farmers market and craft fair runs this Sunday from 11am to 5pm.  Lots of great items to buy, including knitwear, handmade chocolate, cupcakes, fresh coffee, pet supplies, jewellery, homemade soaps, healthy juices and snacks and so much more.  This is a great place to pop into before or after a ramble in Emo Court.

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is The Ridge Of Capard/Cones/Stoneyman.  This walk is a 10km Grade A walk and takes 4 hours so a good level of fitness required. Meeting point is The Ridge Of Capard carpark at 11am . €5 per walk or €20 with annual membership.
