New scheme aimed at repairing vacant houses in Laois

Homeless Laois families will soon be housed in hotels one Councillor has warned
Vacant homes

People with town street houses and rural houses that are vacant and in poor condition need to be aware of the Repair to lease scheme – according to Cllr Tom Mulhall.

The Fine Gael Cllr said: “This scheme was introduced by the present Government and people can apply to their local authority.

“If there are people with these kind of residential dwellings they can contact the housing section of Laois county council for further information.

“There are a number of vacant street houses and rural houses that could be refurbished through this scheme.

“Ministers Eoin Murphy and Damien English are encouraging local authorities to promote this scheme.

“There is a good grant from the council to refurbish the house – then the owner enter into a lease agreement with the council and the property is then rented by the council to an applicant who are presently on the housing list.

“Laois county council has already advertised this scheme but giving the present housing situation I would like to see more interest in this scheme.

“There are around 1,500 people on the housing waiting list in Laois. This will not take all of these people off the housing list but i would like to see more interest in the scheme the fact that i see so many vacant houses in the county.”
