Moment in Time: You’re A Star Auditions rock the Dunamaise in 2004

This month everyone is talking about ‘A Star is Born’, but this week in 2004, it was all about You’re A Star!

For this week’s Moment in Time we took a look back to an exciting weekend in Portlaoise, where You’re A Star held auditions for the show, exclusively for bands, in the Dunamaise.

80 bands took over the stage in front of judges Dave Fanning, Barbara Galavan and Hazel Kaneswaran in an attempt to earn a spot performing at the Eurovision.

Fanning was also on the look out for a couple of acts to appear in the demo-tape section of his television programme ‘The Last Broadcast’, which used to be shown after 11pm on a Saturday night.

The nervous candidates were distracted in the long lines by Ray D’Arcy and even a brief performance by popular band at the time, The Rubens.

Local bands such as The Jury and The Long Weekend were among those who auditioned on the day.

The auditions were aired on RTÉ late that November.
