Laois road which would make you ‘sea-sick’ to undergo remedial works this year

The Mountrath to Abbeyleix road, described as ‘the worst road in the county’, is to undergo works this year.

Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming revealed the news on his Facebook page.

He said: “I have some good news for this bad road between Mountrath and Abbeyleix.

“Everyone knows that for the last few months, the road has been in a terrible condition as the road has been sinking across the bog.

“Indeed, I believe you could almost get sea-sick driving on this road because it is so humpy and bumpy.

“Laois County Council have confirmed to me that funding has been made available to do a major improvement job on this road in the immediate future.

“The tenders have been received and they are being examined. The money is in place and the work will be starting this year because it is a major problem.

“I look forward to this work being completed as urgently as possible. The money is in place for this week to proceed as quickly as possible.”

The issue of the road arose at the latest Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting.

A motion, brought by Cllr James Kelly, called on the Council, ‘as a matter of urgency, to ensure the safety of all road users, carry out comprehensive remedial roadworks on the R430 at Moonbawn, Abbeyleix, Rd, Mountrath’.

The state of the road created considerable debate among on readers a few days ago so they are sure to welcome this development.
