Portlaoise Ladies Hockey Club suffered the first defeat of the season to Corinthians 4th on a horribly wet and cold morning in Dublin at the weekend.

While most people were inside keeping warm and staying well away from Storm Deirdre, the team travelled to Corinthians for the final match of the year.

The opposition started strongly by scoring two goals in first 10 minutes of the match.

They passed the ball quickly amongst themselves and managed to get a third score past the Portlaoise goalie just before half-time.

Portlaoise took control of the game at the start of the second half and following sustained pressure in the opposition’s circle, Ruth Wilkinson scored a goal for Portlaoise.

Soon afterwards Corinthians successfully attacked the Portlaoise goal to score again.

The game ended with a convincing 4-1 win for Corinthians. It was a disappointing game for Portlaoise but they will come back fighting in the New Year.

It is a defeat that leaves Portlaoise fourth in the table.

The girls will return to training on Tuesday January 8 after the Christmas break.

Portlaoise: Linda Monaghan, Susan Fingleton (C), Claire Igoe, Karen Fingleton, Kellie O’Sullivan, Kate Hyland, April Kent, Ruth Wilkinson, Emma Brophy, Yvonne Hargroves, Lucy Dwyer, Jenny Keegan.
