Our guide to what’s on this weekend in Laois

It’s comedy all the way this weekend with 2 pantos running this weekend. The Portlaoise Panto continues its very successful run until Saturday and the Raheen Panto kicks off this Thursday until Sunday.  

Also comedian Danny O’Brien is in Kavanagh’s Comedy Club for the perfect tonic for a Friday night.

Snooker legends Ken Doherty and Dennis Taylor are in the Midlands Park Hotel this Saturday for a snooker extravaganza.

There are also beautiful guided walks giving us lots of reasons to get out and about this weekend.  

THURSDAY JANUARY 24

Portlaoise Pantomime: Sleeping Beauty

The ever popular Portlaoise Panto continues this Thursday to Saturday. The show has got rave reviews so far and there is limited availability for the last couple of nights so get booking soon.  Tickets cost €8 child & €15 adult. The show runs at 8pm every night with a matinée at 2.30pm on Saturday. For bookings see here.  

Raheen Pantomime: Cinderella

The Raheen Panto group are another stalwart on the panto scene. This year is Cinderella and it promises to be a great show. It’s running in Heywood Community School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8pm and a matinee on Sunday at 3pm.

Tickets are €10 per adult and €8 per child/OPA. Tickets can be purchased on the door.  

FRIDAY JANUARY 25

Danny O’Brien ‘Lock In’

Its nearing the end of January and we could all do with a good laugh so what not check out Danny O’Brien at Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue. Enjoy some great comedy and welcome the weekend. 

The gig begins at 9.30pm. Tickets cost €14.50 and can be booked from here

Vintage Table Quiz

Ballyfin Vintage & Veteran Club is holding their annual table quiz in the Deadman’s Inn at 8.30pm. It costs €40 for a table of 4 or €10 per person with lots of spot prizes on the day. All proceeds will go to local causes.

SATURDAY JANUARY 26

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is Togher Wood Guided Walk.  This walk is a Grade C 5km walk and takes 2 hours so its suitable for all levels of fitness.

Meeting point is The Rugby Club carpark at 2pm. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership.

Snooker Extravaganza

A snooker extravaganza is taking place Saturday night in the Midlands Park Hotel.  This is a must for all snooker fans and stars Ken Doherty and Dennis Taylor with special guest John Virgo.

Tickets cost €25 or €40 for the VIP package. It begins at 8pm and tickets are available from the hotel on 057-8678588 or from here

SUNDAY JANUARY 27

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is Catholes River Circuit Guided Walk.  This walk is a Grade A 12km walk and takes 4-5 hours so a good level of fitness is required.

Meeting point is at Catholes carpark at 11am.  €5 per walk or €20 annual membership.
