New footpaths in Stradbally cost ‘less than €100,000’

Any of you who live or have travelled through Stradbally recently will have noticed Laois County Council out in full force laying down some brand new footpaths.

The works actually began before Christmas and are now almost complete.

The matter arose at this afternoon’s meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municiple District where Cllr Paschal McEvoy sought to clarify the total cost of the project.

He said that people had contacted him believing the new footpaths had cost €1.2 million but this is ‘ridiculous’.

He said: “There are some terrible rumours going around that putting down the new foothpaths cost €1.2 million. I don’t know where this figure has come from but it is ridiculous and untrue.

“The project was funded under the Town & Village Renewal Scheme as well as from some discretionary funding from myself and Cllr John Moran.

“The whole project actually cost less than €100,000 and I would hope that publicising this issue will put the rumours to bed.”

Cllr McEvoy thanked Cllr Moran for his contribution and also expressed his happiness at the project.

He said: “The footpaths in Stradbally had fallen into a bad state so this work was certainly badly needed.”
