The people of Laois and Ireland will be asked to vote in the Local Elections, European Elections and the Divorce Referendum this Friday.

With three different things to vote it, it is interesting to see where all of these sheets of paper actually end up.

There are various different polling stations around the county and when they close on Friday evening, they votes from the three votes will all be transported to St Mary’s Hall in Portlaoise.

From here, they will be opened at 9am and sorted.

Once sorted, the Local Election and the Divorce Referendum votes will be transported to Powerpoint Engineering in the Kealew Business Park where counting will start at 2pm.

Donal Brennan, one of the Directors of Services in Laois County Council, is the returning officer for the Local Election Count while Paul Featherstonehaugh, who is the County Registrar, is the returning officer for the European Elections and the Divorce Referendum.

Meanwhile, the European Election votes will be transported to Cork for counting.

They will go to Nemo Rangers GAA club in Cork where the count will take place.

In terms of results, we would expect to have the Divorce Referendum in by Saturday evening but after that – sit tight for a hectic weekend.
