It was a long but fruitful journey up to Swatragh in Derry as the Laois intermediate camogie side got their 2019 All-Ireland campaign off to a winning start.

A Joyce Dunne goal was all that seperated the sides in the end as a blend of youth and experience pulled Laois through this battle today.

Indeed the strength and depth of the team was shown as all five substitutions were made, with young players such as Jessie Quinlan laying down her marker by raising the white flag twice.

Today also marked an intercounty adult championship debut for St Brigid’s woman Clodagh Tynan, who was a key member of this year’s All-Ireland minor ‘B’ winning Laois side.

Dunne’s goal, as well as points from captain Alison McEvoy and long-range freetaker Sarah-Anne Fitzgerald meant that Laois went into the interval in the lead on 1-5 to Derry’s six points.

Nail-biting drama ensued in the final few minutes as Derry held onto possession with only the goal left between Donal Franks and John O’Dwyer’s sides.

However Laois defended well, with some stellar saves by goalkeeper Laura Dunne and defensive play by the full and half-back lines to keep the three points between them.

Another trip up north is next on the cards for Laois as they face Down next week on Saturday June 22.
