All set for start of term at Laois school, despite temporary works needing to be carried out

A primary school in Laois is one of 17 schools identified as having structural problems, but the scheduled temporary works are not a startling development and will not hinder the pupils or staff.

Maryborough NS in Portlaoise will need temporary works in the coming weeks to make sure it okay to re-open this month.

The school was completed by Western Building Systems, the company that built 22 other schools where problems were discovered last year.

But school principal Bríd-Ann Buggie has said that the works were expected and everyone has readily informed regarding developments.

“We have been kept in the loop all summer long with assessments in fairness. Parents knew that the assessments were happening and the Department of Education have kept in direct contact with myself.

Marborough was cleared as being okay for use last year, after initial assessments found no need for any precautionary measures to be put in place.

“So after further investigation works it was found that more work would need to be carried out. They informed me of this earlier this week and a message was sent parents,” said principal Buggie.

Maryborough NS was only one of five buildings constructed by Western Building Systems in the midlands which is deemed safe to reopen.

Since then, engineers have carried out more detailed assessments.

The necessary works will be carried over the summer break next year.
