LISTEN: Transition Years in Portlaoise CBS create new school anthem

St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise have released their new school anthem written and performed by their Transition Years.

Working with GMC Beats the students wrote and recorded their own anthem late in 2019 – ‘We Go Above And Beyond’.

This new anthem promotes a theme of inclusiveness, diversity, and brotherhood through a mix of rap, tribal chanting and Irish traditional music.

The anthem has given many students a chance to show their talents with Rossa O Dufaigh (whistle), Jamie Troy (bodhrán), Charles Agha (vocals), Cian Mac Gearailt (vocals and guitar), Sean Michael Lewis (accordian), Cathal Ging (fiddle) and Jack Murrell (accordian) playing instruments such and Yousif Abdel, Bobo Lawal, Filip Florczyk and Gavin Dempsey performing lead vocals.

This project was sponsored by People First Credit Union and Laois County Council Arts Office in conjunction with Wellbeing Week at St Mary’s CBS, Portlaoise.

Teacher Ms Quinlan said: “The boys were fabulous to work with.

“This piece of fusion highlights the breadth of creative talent across all years at St Mary’s.”
