All of the weekend soccer results as CCFL returns to action

An exciting new venture for the Midlands Schoolboys League

The local CCFL soccer season has had a disrupted couple of weeks with one storm after another.

But there was plenty of action this weekend in cup and league competitions.

There were wins for Portlaoise side Towerhill Rovers and Clonaslee Utd in the Combined Counties Cup while Rosenallis and Stradbally played out a scoreless draw in Division 1 of the CCFL.

Portlaoise were 5-4 winners over Melville in Division 2 with Abbeyleix beating Maryborough 5-0 in Division 3A and St Aengus going down 4-2 to Cloneygowan.

Combined Counties Cup

Towerhill Rovers 5 Killeigh 0

Portlaoise side Towerhill Rovers recorded an impressive win in the COunties Cup today when they proved far too strong for Offaly side Killeigh.

The first goal came after 35 minutes when centre back Aiden McGovern brought the ball out of defence into midfield.

He played a diagonal ball over the top and Paul Sutton got on the end of it and scored from a tight angle.

The second came just before half time. Left back Shane Collins crossed from the left to back post to Shane Brophy who flicked it high to Hayden Delaney who beat the defender with a great header.

Killeigh had a chance to reduce the deficit on the 65-minute mark but a great save from Kevin Sheehan prevented a long-range effort from going into the top corner.

Portlaoise got back on top after that for the last 25 minutes and got one straight after their chance.

Paddy Downey picked up possession in centre mid, swiveled and played a perfect through ball to Hayden Delaney who out muscled the defender and dinked it over the advancing keeper from just inside the box.

The fourth came from substitute Emeka. Shane Collins went on a mazy run inside his own have beating four players before feeding Emeka who kept his composure when one on one and flicked it into far corner with his right foot with about 15 minutes remaining.

And Emeka got his second when a Joey Delaney cross from the left wasn’t dealt with by their centre back. Emeka picked up the loose ball, turned on his left and slammed it past the keeper.

TOWERHILL: Kevin Sheehan; Shane Collins, Aidan McGovern, Jack Fennell, James Furlong; Luke O’Brien, Paul Sutton, Paddy Downey; Joey Delaney, Hayden Delaney, Shane Brophy.

CCFL Division 1

Rosenallis 0 Stradbally 0

A very entertaining game played in awful conditions.

Rosenallis started strongly and controlled possession well in the centre of the field with Charlie Friel going close from a deflected shot early on. Stradbally then worked themselves into the game and were always a threat from set pieces.

Their first chance came from a free kick 20 yards from the Rosenallis goal which required an excellent diving save from Rosenallis keeper Paul Friel.

Stradbally controlled possession for the rest of the half but Rosenallis continued to be a threat on the break. The pace from Robert Stevenson on the Rosenallis wing caused problems for the Stradbally defence all day long.

No team could create a clear cut chances for the rest of the half, with both defences standing firm.

Rosenallis introduced Donagh Calally at half time and he was a constant threat for Rosenallis by driving at the Stradbally defence any chance he got.

Stradbally began to create some openings, but the resolute Rosenallis defence was excellent throughout, with Tom Hyland and David McEvoy really standing out.

Both teams could have won it, so a draw was a fair result on the day.

ROSENALLIS: Paul Friel, Tom Hyland, David McEvoy, Darren McEvoy, Robbie Stevenson, Sean Dunne, John Dunne, Gary Dowling, Mark Dunne, Alan Herbert, Charlie Friel. Subs used: Donagh Calally, Joseph Shelly

STRADBALLY TOWN: Joe Walshe; Colin Beale, Podge Fitzpatrick, Billy Murphy, Tim Flood, Richie Ryan, Colin Murphy, Damien Murphy, Benny Lawlor, Alex Conway, Jody Dillon.
