Former Laois minister and government colleague in Twitter spat over new book

The publication of a new book has resulted in two politicians entering into something of a war of words over Twitter.

Former Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan and former Minister for Sport Shane Ross traded blows over the social media platform recently.

In Bed With the Blueshirts is set for release at the end of October and it will see former Independent TD Ross recount his time in government with Fine Gael.

The book has been described by Eason’s with the following blurb:

”Cabinet minister Shane Ross reveals the bitter internal battles fought with the old Blueshirts, the crises when the coalition came close to collapse and the sometimes fraught personal relationships between the fifteen figures who made up the last government.

”He recounts how a group of Independents risked everything to form a government that was expected to last for only months but which ran for more than four years, under two Taoisigh with utterly different styles.”

Laois TD Flanagan served alongside Ross at the cabinet table for four years – one as Minister for Foreign Affairs and three as Minister for Justice.

And he took to Twitter to throw a dig at Mr Ross over the book.

He said: “Eagerly awaiting publication. I expect it to top the Fiction bestseller list by Christmas.”

Mr Ross, who lost his seat in Dublin Rathdown in February, hit back at Flanagan.

He said: “Don’t worry Charlie, you won’t be left out. Fasten your safety belt!”

Charlie subsequently retweeted that reply – so perhaps he is looking forward to reading it after all! One way or another, the book should make for a very interesting read.
