Coronavirus: 675 new cases and six further deaths as hospital figures begin to stabilise

A further 675 Coronavirus cases have been announced and a further six additional deaths – all of which passed away this month.

Of today’s cases, 6 of them are in Laois, meaning the county’s 14-day incident rate per 100,000 people is now 255 from 251.5 which it was yesterday. The national average is 299.

For further context, the Laois rate was 69.66 on August 7 when the county was placed in a localised lockdown along with Kildare and Offaly.

The 14-day incident rate in Laois previously peaked at over 178 on April 21 when there was 155 active cases.

Of today’s cases:

  • 309 are men / 364 are women
  • 65% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 35 years old
  • 199 in Dublin, 104 in Cork, 67 in Meath, 50 in Limerick, 41 in Kildare and the remaining 214 cases are spread across another 20 counties.

As of 2pm today 328 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 41 are in ICU. 19 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “Everyone must be aware of the actions they should take if they have symptoms or are awaiting a test or if they are a contact of a confirmed case.

“If you have symptoms of COVID-19, you must self isolate and phone your GP for further advice.

“If you have been referred for a test or are awaiting a test result, you must self isolate.

“If you are a confirmed case of COVID-19 you must self isolate for 10 days.

“If you are identified or have identified yourself as a close contact of a confirmed case, you must restrict your movements.

“Stay informed on the public health advice around COVID-19 and be prepared to protect yourself and those around you.”

Hospital Figures

There has been a slight increase in the number of people being treated for Covid-19 in intensive care units, which is at the highest level in five months.

The latest figures show that as of 11am, there were 41 patients in ICU, compared to 38 overnight.

It is the highest number since 29 May. However, it remains well below the peak in mid-April, when 155 people with the virus were being treated in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals has reduced by 13 to 328, according to the latest figures.
