‘No Carlow land’ left in Graiguecullen as 75 remain on the housing waiting list

Carlow County Council say they have no land remaining for the construction of houses in the Graiguecullen area as 75 people remain on the housing waiting list in the area.

A joint venture between Laois and Carlow County Councils will see 77 new homes built in a new estate on the Ballickmoyler Road, Graiguecullen by the end of the third quarter of this year.

Of the 77, 20 have been allocated to people on Laois County Council’s housing waiting list with the remaining 57 going to Carlow.

But a joint meeting of of the Carlow Municipal District and the Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municipal District this morning heard that a high number of Laois people remain without a home in the area.

Cllr Padraig Fleming said: “There are about 75 people waiting for a home that missed out on one of these 20.

“The value of getting a person a home that they can call their own cannot be measured.

“We need to work together to determine how many of these people would accept a home in Laois or would prefer to live in Carlow if the opportunity arose.”

He suggested that a change be made to the application form so that instead of selecting ‘Graiguecullen’ as a preference, you can select ‘Graiguecullen, Laois’ or ‘Graiguecullen, Carlow’.

This was agreed to those at the meeting while on the issue of land, Joe Delaney of the Housing Section of Laois County Council said that Laois would be interested in further housing developments in the area if land became available.

He said: “Laois has some land in Graiguecullen and we would be interested in purchasing more if it became available.”
