Laois County Council to investigate the ‘live-streaming’ of public meetings

Laois County Council are to investigate the costs associated with live streaming all public meetings.

The matter came before Monday’s monthly meeting of the Council which was held in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

Fine Gael Councillor Aisling Moran put forward the motion.

She said: “I am proposing that we in Laois County Council livestream all public meetings.

“Presently, our colleagues in Kildare, Dublin City, Fingal, Dun Laoighre/Rathdown, Roscommon, Cork City and County, Meath and Tipperary Council all have online public viewing facilities including playback.

“This allows for full transparency for our constituents. It gives context to what is spoken about in this chamber.

“This is how the younger generation accesses information and we need to facilitate all going forward.

“This could be a great platform to develop an interest in the workings of local politics.”

Cllr Moran’s motion received support from her fellow Councillors and Chief Executive John Mulholland said the cost of doing so would now be sought.

He said: “If it is the will of the elected members, we will seek to have this costed.

“It can be included in the budget estimates for 2022 and Councillors can decide then.”
