You may have a notion that you know a thing or two about agriculture but the ‘Know Your Ag’ competition can sort the wheat from the chaff.

The Camross branch of Macra notched up a notable win recently when it emerged as the victors in the All Ireland ‘Know Your Ag” quiz contest held in Tralee, Kerry recently.

The Camross Macra na Feirme winning team comprised of Michelle Lalor, Sylvester Phelan, Trish Lalor and William Delaney.

The competition comprises of six rounds of questions which covers the technical, scientific and policy-based questions in the Agricultural industry.

Some of the questions included: What price do farmers receive for chopping oilseed rape straw under the straw incorporation scheme?

What is the percentage convergence being proposed in the new CAP? Who are the 3 largest beef processers in Ireland? And in relation to dairy farming what does FPCM stand for?…..not easy!

It’s a second All Ireland title this year for the Camross group after Aedin Lowry from won the Long Poc competition in June and it’s an addition to the growing list of Laois winners of the All Ireland ‘Know Your Ag’ title.

One of the team members William Delaney said “It’s a great win for the club after coming 3rd in the competition in 2018 and a great way to start off the slow return to Macra activities.

“Events and competitions across the county are getting going now that restrictions allow.

“Getting involved in activities is the lifeblood of Macra and now that we are emerging from lockdown it is as important as ever that people can talk to each other as social isolation is a big problem for people in rural areas.”
