1 – Man arrested and charged following distraction theft in Laois town

Gardai in Laois have arrested and charged a man in his 50s following a case of ‘distraction theft’.

The incident occurred in Portarlington recently and Gardai subsequently arrested a man in his 50s.

The victim was robbed after his attention was deliberately distracted in the planned theft.

2 – Former Kildare great appointed Ballylinan manager

Former Kildare footballer Tadhg Fennin has been appointed Ballylinan manager for the 2022 season.

Fennin takes over from Mick Lillis, who had been in charge for the past two seasons.

Former Carlow and O’Hanrahan’s footballer Lee Walker began life as a Graiguecullen player in fine fashion as he led his new side to a nine point win over Stradbally in the Kelly Cup on Tuesday night.

The lively centre forward kicked 2-6 and tormented Stradbally from start to finish in this Kelly Cup encounter as Graigue were 2-11 to 0-8 winners.


6 – Laois ladies footballers see off Strom Franklin and Tipperary to move closer to Division 2 semi-final

We had two venue changes, gale force winds, hailstones and driving rain – but the Laois Ladies prevailed through it all to reach the Division 2 semi finals with a game to spare.

Donie Brennan’s charges faced Tipperary in Heywood in the worst weather imaginable on Sunday last.

But just like they did in the opening round against Clare, Laois came from behind to claim their second successive league win – 2-8 to 2-6.

Heywood Community School’s remarkable Senior ‘C’ football championship continues after they were comprehensive winners in the Leinster final on Monday.

Played on the fabulous 3G pitch belonging to Leixlip GAA, they had too much for St Mac Dara’s of Dublin, winning by 1-17 to 1-9.

8 – Councillor pledges to ‘up my game’ in bid to bring badly needed car park to Laois town

‘All I am looking for is a small car park and I don’t think that is too much to ask for’.

That was the plea by Councillor Ollie Clooney at a recent meeting of the Borris-In-Ossory-Mountmellick District.

The Independent Councillor, who chairs the group, has been calling for a car park to be built in Durrow since his election in 2019.

Emo Court and Parklands will host a major new one-day business and sporting event this May, which is expected to attract up to 5,000 visitors to the iconic Laois landmark.

Shine 2022 is a one-day extravaganza that will allow “Laois businesses to showcase their products and services in a tradeshow style event” while simultaneously hosting a gruelling ‘Fittest Club in Ireland’ competition comprised of 32 sports clubs from around the country.
