1 – Gardai appeal for information following burglary in rural Laois while arrest made after incident in Portarlington

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to come forward following a burglary in in Cardtown, Camross, on Monday evening, February 28.

And Gardai also were investigating a burglary at a home on Station Road, Portarlington.

2 – Jobs on the way to Laois after council agrees to sell Junction 17 land for more than €1 million

New jobs are on the way to Laois after County Councillors agreed to sell a portion of land at Portlaoise Enterpise Park to a Limerick company.

3.42 hectares, designated as Plot C, at the business park in Togher is going to Kirby Group Engineering for €1,060,200.

It is hoped that 50 jobs can be created here by 2024 when all is operational.

3 – Mountmellick appoint new hurling manager as Carter takes the reigns

Mountmellick have appointed Damien Carter as their new hurling manager for the 2022 season.

The Ballinakill native is also a selector with the county minor team this year under manager Declan Qualter and former Waterford manager Derek McGrath who is coach.

He takes over from James Young who had been in charge of Mountmellick last season. He’ll be assisted in the role by former Mountmellick player Darren Young and former Kilkenny player Denis Byrne who will link up with the setup later in the season.

4 – Laois business man and local GAA clubs organise Ukrainian relief appeal

A Laois businessman and a number of local GAA clubs have come together to launch a Ukrainian relief appeal.

Ger Hyland of Hyland Transport has organised the venture in conjunction with Rosenallis, Clonaslee, Mountmellick, Ballyfin, Kilcavan, O’Moores Camogie and Sarsfields Ladies Football clubs plus Mountmellick Macra Na Feirme.

On Saturday March 19, between 10am and 4pm, they are asking people to bring donations to Hyland Transport in Rosenallis (R32 E264).

5 – Former Laois doctor the driving force behind a massive humanitarian fundraiser for Ukraine

A former Laois-based doctor is involved in a massive humanitarian campaign that has been launched in response to the war in Ukraine.

Kateryna Kachurets, who now works in Dublin, has previously practiced in Kilnacourt Surgery Portarlington, Athy Medical, Portlaoise Hospital and Tullamore Emergency Department.

She has been in Ireland for five and a half years following achieving her degree in Poland. Originally from Ukraine, Dr Kachurets has joined with six other doctors from around Ireland to launch Medical Help Ukraine.


6 – Late drama as Antrim strike with final kick to deny Laois victory in Division 3

Laois were left reeling after they conceded a point with the final kick of the game to draw with Antrim in O’Moore Park in Division 3 of the National Football League.

It looked like Laois were going to claim the two points when keeper Matthew Byron kicked them ahead in the second minute of injury time.

But in the final seconds of the game, Laois switched off from a short free and allowed Ryan Murray to score. It finished 1-8 apiece.


7 – Whelan’s late brace sees Laois U-20 footballers defeat Meath in Round 2 of John Kerins Cup

Two wonderful injury time points from Ballyroan-Abbey’s Brian Whelan saw the Laois U-20 footballers defeat Meath on Saturday.

This Round 2 John Kerins Cup competition was played in a windy Clonard in Meath where both teams struggled with the conditions.

But Laois just about got the better of them and following the draw against Kildare last week, Laois now have a chance of reaching the final of this pre-season competition.


Vadym Binko Rosenallis

8 – Rosenallis-based Ukrainian among those to travel home to assist war effort

A Ukrainian man who had been working in Rosenallis is among those who have travelled back to their home country to join the war against Russia.

Vadym Binko, who had been working in a TUS role at the Rosenallis GAA grounds, returned to his home country on Sunday following a call from Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenesky to those living overseas.

He said goodbye to his wife Maryna and their two children at Dublin Airport on Sunday evening before boarding a flight to the Polish city of Krakow.


LGBT+ Mural Portlaoise

9 – Powerful new mural unveiled in Portlaoise to mark Midlands LGBT+ first birthday

A very impressive new mural to mark the first birthday of the the Midlands LGBT+ project was unveiled in Portlaoise this week when Minister of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O’Gorman was on hand.

The mural is located in Lyster Square close to the library and its unveiling was also attended by Ministers Sean Fleming and Pippa Hackett as well as TD Charlie Flanagan.

The unveiling marks the first anniversary of the Midlands LGBT+ Project, the support and advocacy service helping to reduce isolation among LGBTQ+ people in the Midlands.


Showcase 2022

10 – Two Laois businesses to feature at Showcase Ireland’s international creative expo

Two Laois businesses took part in Showcase in the RDS last week, Ireland’s renowned creative trade expo that includes 300 exhibitors and attracts over 4,000 visitors from Ireland and overseas.

Yvonne Bolger Jewellery, which is based in Emo, and Vale Ceramics from Barrowhouse will show their products to buyers from home and abroad.

Yvonne Bolger designs and handcrafts pieces in Sterling Silver and Gold taking inspiration from Ireland’s rich mythology and landscape. Vale Ceramics is owned by South Africa-Italian ceramic artist Vale van der Merwe who lives in Barrowhouse.

Showcase is an annual destination for retail buyers from Ireland and more than 20 other countries, including the UK, USA, Mainland Europe and Asia, all keen to see the very latest designs from Ireland’s top brands and craft producers.
