A fundraising concert has been announced for a Laois secondary school’s therapy dog.

Chips, a Labrador puppy, joined the school last month and is being trained by Martin Maher of Scallywags Dog Training.

On Friday April 1, The Valves, Paper Planes and The Shades are performing at Kavanaghs Bar and Venue on the night.

A therapy dog is a dog that is trained to provide affection, comfort and support to people.

This is often done in settings such as hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, libraries, hospices, or disaster areas.

In contrast to assistance dogs, which are trained to assist specific patients with their day-to-day physical needs, therapy dogs are trained to interact with all kinds of people, not just their handlers.

A spokesperson for the school explained how the night will work.

They said: “Dunamase College Parents Council have organised a fundraiser in Kavanaghs Bar on Frida April 1 at 9.15pm (Doors at 9pm).

“The fundraiser is in aid of the schools therapy dog Chips. Chips is being trained at the moment by Martin Maher of Scallywags Dog Training.

“Chips will be available to provide affection, comfort and support to students.

“He will help calm and soothe, ease anxiety and boost moods.

“Tickets for the event, priced at €10, are also available from the school office.

“It is a strictly over 18’s event and the Parents Council would be grateful for any support.”
