1 – Laois student achieves one of the best Leaving Cert’s in the country with perfect eight H1s

A Laois student achieved one of the best Leaving Cert results in the country this year.

Sarah Talbot, who hails from Ballacolla, scored eight H1s in the end of school exams – a perfect result.

2 – Tribute paid as well-known Laois teacher and vice-principal brings 40 year career to an end

There was an out pour of emotion as a well-known Laois teacher in St Fergal’s College in Rathdowney retired recently.

Mr Seán Conroy retired as Deputy Principal, the role he has held for the last 15 years.

Mr Conroy was well known inside and out of the classroom as he made many contributions, in particular on the hurling pitch.

3 – Sadness and shock at sudden death of well-known Laois woman in France

There much sadness after the death occurred of Frances Sheeran, a native of Coolrain, in Cannes in the South of France.

Frances was aged in her early 60s and passed away after a short illness last week.

4 – Waterford hurling legend set to be part of Laois backroom team

There was excitement in the Laois hurling circles as Waterford hurling legend Dan Shanahan is set to be the right-hand man to new Laois manager Willie Maher.

Maher was confirmed as the new Laois boss last week– and it’s understood that Shanahan will be officially added to his backroom team as a coach/selector.

5 – 14-man O’Dempsey’s strike at the end to see off St Joseph’s and reach Senior semis

O’Dempsey’s were the second side through to the Senior semi finals following a dramatic victory over St Joseph’s last weekend.

They had to play with 14 men for half an hour and fell three points down with 57 minutes on the clock but they never gave up and are now through.

6 – Sadness as retired Garda who was a decorated Laois footballer passes away

There was deep sadness in Laois Friday, following the passing of a retired Garda who was also a talented footballer.

Leo Brennan, originally from Wolfhill but living in 17 Yellowmeadows Park, Clondalkin, Dublin, died peacefully on Wednesday September 14.

7 – Courageous Courtwood stun Graiguecullen with late surge to reach first Senior semi since 1976

Courtwood are through to their first Senior semi final since 1976 following a remarkable victory over Graiguecullen last week.

Graiguecullen led for much of the game but failed to score after the 46th minute as Courtwood stayed going.

8 – Shock and sadness as Laois man passes away suddenly in New York

There was shock and deep sadness following the news that a Laois man has passed away suddenly at his home in New York.

Enda Corcoran is originally from Coolagh in Clonaslee but had been living in Mamaroneck, New York.

9 – Portlaoise through to Senior semi finals as they have too much for Clonaslee St Manman’s

Portlaoise were the first team through to the Senior semi finals following a comfortable win over Clonaslee-St Manman’s.

Kevin Fitzpatrick’s were on top from the start and built up a commanding lead in the first half, which saw them win by nine points.

10 – Killeshin stay up as Ballylinan’s long and proud senior stay comes to an end

Killeshin preserved their senior football status following a deserved win over Ballylinan in the re-fixed relegation final O’Moore Park.

The result means that Ballylinan will play at intermediate level in 2023, for the first time since they won that competition in 1973.
