‘I’ll stand on the road and count the cars myself’ warns Laois Councillor as he pleas for survey to be done

A Laois Councillor has made a desperate plea for road safety measures to be carried out on the R430 in Killeshin.

Independent Councillor Ben Brennan warned officials that if a speed survey was not carried out at the location, he’s stand out on the road and count the cars himself.

Mr Brennan made the comments at a recent meeting of the Graiguecullen-Portarlington Municipal District.

He said: “I am asking for an update on the safety measures at the R430 in Killeshin.

“Around 1,000 people each day pass up and down this road at serious speed.

“I want something done before an adult or a child are seriously hurt.

“A speed survey needs to be done. I’ll stand on the road and count the cars myself if it isn’t done.

“I also want to see a pedestrian crossing built here too.”

Supporting Councillor Brennan, Fianna Fail’s Councillor Padraig Fleming said: “I travel on that road an I am very conscious of it.

“Cars pass you out at 70 or 80km/h and it is very dangerous.”

Engineer Farhan Nasiem said: “Road Design proposes traffic calming measures at the location and will arrange a site meeting with Councillor Brennan.”

Councillor Brennan also sought an update on the taking in charge of Meadows Way and Tommy Murphy Park housing estates in Graiguecullen.

Planning Officer Evelyn Brownrigg gave a detailed reply on the progress in both estates.

In relation to Meadows Way, Ms Brownrigg said: “Works have been carried out on the estate for the last four weeks.

“These include repairs to foul sewer and cycle tracks, the provision of final surfacing to roadway and the provision of additional fire hydrants.

“However, two additional public lights are required and there is a delay in sourcing these due to supply issues but should have them in the next 10-12 weeks.

“Once the additional lights are in place, it can be recommended for taking in charge.”

In relation to Tommy Murphy Park, Ms Brownrigg said: “This has been advertised for taking in charge and will be on the agenda for the next September Council meeting.”
