Sadness at death of Fr Denis Murphy, parish priest of Doonane

The death has occurred of Fr Denis Murphy, the popular parish priest of Doonane of the past 26 years.

Fr Murphy, originally from Goresbridge in Kilkenny, was a popular member of the Crettyard community, which comes under the parish of Doonane.

Crettyard GAA club and St Abban’s Athletic Club were among those to pay tribute to him.

The primary schools of Mayo, Newtown and Ardough were all under his watch.

Previously Fr Murphy had served in the parish of Bagenalstown in Carlow.

Fr Murphy is pre-deceased by his parents John and Margaret, brother Eamonn and sisters Rita, Betty Morrissey, Sister Anna (Cross and Passion), Sister Breda (Cross and Passion).

He will be sadly missed by Bishop Denis Nulty, fellow Clergymen and colleagues, his nephew, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives, neighbours, parishioners and many friends.

Rosary is on Tuesday at 7pm in The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mayo, Co Laois with arrival to St Abban’s Church, Doonane, (Eircode R93 AT86) on Wednesday at 4pm with prayers that evening at 7pm.

Funeral Mass on Thursday in St Abban’s Church, Doonane, at 11am followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
