A popular Laois bakery, which opened its doors in February 2019, has announced it has closed with immediate effect.

Sweet Bakery was located on James Fintan Lalor Avenue in Portlaoise, beside Egan’s Off Licence and just up the road from the People First Credit Union.

The business was owned husband-and-wife team Marcin and Patrycja Duda, originally from Katowice in Poland but living in Ireland now for 15 years.

The couple met while training in one of Poland’s top Bakery and Confectionary schools. Marcin is a professional confectionary, Patrycja is a professional baker.

After almost four years of trading in Portlaoise, the couple have announced the sad news that they have closed.

They become the third Laois business, after Rafters Cafe in Portlaoise and Seve’s in Killenard, to close down in recent weeks.

Marcin and Patrycja Duda announced the news on the Sweet Bakery Facebook page yesterday.

They said: “It is with extreme regret that we are writing this post to inform you that we have decided to close down our business, Sweet Bakery, and our last day of business will be on Saturday 21st January 2023.

“After that date, Sweet Bakery will no longer be taking any Fresh Bread and Cakes orders.

“The decision to close down this business was not easy, but because of current uncertain economic situation and further unexpected increasing costs of raw ingredients, labour, energy, packaging and fuel we are regrettably forced to close down our retail and wholesale operation as it has become economically unjustified.

“We had no other choice but to take this unfortunate decision.
All thanks to our loyal customers and our lovely team, we were able to come so far. We will never forget the amount of support we received.

“We thank all the customers as well as our team to have supported and adjusting to this situation with us this far.

“It would not have been possible to have come this long without you all. Thank you for being with our company in all its ups and downs.

“We would like to apologize for this inconvenience caused, nonetheless.

“Please email us at info@sweetbakery.ie if you need any further information.”
