Laois Sports Partnership: Trekker walks, virtual Couch to 5k and upcoming programmes

Laois Sports Partnership January 2023

Laois Sports Partnership have hit the ground running in 2023 with a number of activities, programmes and courses.

So far in 2023, we have already engaged with men, women, secondary schools, primary schools, the elderly and people with disabilities.

The response from people in the New year has been fantastic, we have seen fantastic engagement all across the county with Laois LSP and the community Sports Hubs.

Community Trekker Walks

At the end of December 2022, we began a series of Community Trekkers Walks.

These walks are consisting of participants from out Walker Leader course, putting their new learnings to action.

The series is made up of nine walks throughout the county. So far, we have completed walks in Emo Court, Derryounce, Abbeyleix, Heywood and the Ridge of Capard.

Soccer with Rehab Care

Rehab Care have continued their soccer programme in St. Mary’s Hall, Portlaoise, this month.

Fitness for Mammys

This programme is a fun beginner exercise programme for mothers, grandparents, guardians, child minders and their children.

Pre-Gym with Woodlands for Health

The Woodlands for Health group have been attending a Pre Gym programme in Laois Leisure Portlaoise for the past couple of weeks.

This programme is an introduction to some light resistance training along with some cardio exercises. The engagement has been fantastic each week and participants have been making great progress.

Scooch

Scooch has remained very popular and has attracted many participants to St. Marys Hall this January.

On average, there have been roughly 40 participants each session and more importantly, this is mad up of all ages and abilities. Scooch is a very inclusive game and has a good level of competition to make it that bit more enjoyable.

Indoor Activator Poles

Activator poles returned to Ballinakill this month. Thanks to the fantastic indoor facility we were able to continue our sessions even through the harsh weather.

This is a free six-week programme and ends on February 16. If you would like to participate in upcomig activator programmes, contact Eimear on 0860111722/ebryant@laoissports.ie.

The benefits of using Activator Poles include; improved posture, enhanced balance and stability and improved co-ordination.

Virtual Couch to 5K

We relaunched our Virtual couch to 5k programme this January. This six-week programme is free to join and participants receive resources to support their journey upon registration.

To assist participants, Laois LSP provide a training plan and weekly podcasts to help motivate participants and direct people towards their goals.

The programme is six weeks long and participants can complete their runs at a time that is convenient to them.

Participants of the programme are places in a draw to one of two prizes. A FITBIT Watch or a €100 voucher for Colgan’s Sports. For information on this programme, contact Eimear on 0860111722

Line Dancing with Maureen Culleton

  • Thursdays at 11am in Parish Centre, Portlaoise.
  • March 2-April 6 (6 weeks).

Street Leagues

This year, the Street Leagues will be running in four venues:

  • Portlaoise AFC
  • Mountmellick Community School
  • Clover FC Rathdowney
  • Portarlington Leisure Centre

The Street Leagues will run every Wednesday for seven weeks

March 8-April 19

Collaboration with Laois Leisure

Laois Sports Partnership will be collaborating with Laois Leisure, which will include free and subsidised programmes, staff upskilling and free training courses delivered to clubs.

Throughout these various programmes and courses, we will engage with many target groups including; men, women, children, older adults, the travelling community, people with disabilities, disadvantaged communities and Deis schools.
