Gardai investigating after man arrested and soccer match abandoned in Laois

Gardai have launched an investigation after a soccer match was abandoned in Laois on Sunday.

Arlington AFC and Coil Dubh AFC clashed in Castle Park, Portarlington in the Senior Division of the Kildare District League.

This competition runs parallel to the League of Ireland so unlike the CCFL which is coming near an end, the Kildare league is just getting underway.

The game in question was approaching its conclusion when a supporter is alleged to have ran in from the sideline and head-butted one of the players.

A mass brawl is then alleged to have ensued before members of an Garda Siochana appeared on the scene to quell it.

An ambulance was also called and a man was taken away to be treated for a head injury.

This was after the referee had decided to abandon the game altogether.

Gardai confirmed that one man was arrested following the incident and later charged.

He has since been released from custody and a file will be prepared for the DPP.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the incident to contact them.

Gardai say: “We are appealing for eye witnesses or for anyone who has information or footage of the incident to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100.”
