The Laois Hurlers Golf Society are set to start of their outings this coming weekend.

The season’s opener takes place in Rathdowney golf club on Saturday, May 6, with tee times available from 9am to 10.30am.

Portlaoise Golf Club will host the next outing on Saturday, July 22, and they conclude with the Captain’s Prize which, this year, takes place in Abbeyleix.

The society are pleased and honoured to announce Liam Corby as the Captain for 2023 and wish him well for the year ahead.

Since the Hurlers Society was founded way back in 1988, it has delivered many hours of enjoyable golf to our members.

The main focus is to continue contact amongst former players together with maintaining links between present day hurlers and those that have hung up their boots.

It is open to all, with new members of all golfing standards welcome. Overall, there are a total of six outings, including three Inter County events.

Within the Society the most sought-after prize is undoubtedly the Ollie Fennell Trophy in honour of the Clonad and Laois legend who was a long-time member.

This trophy is awarded to the player with the best overall score over a selected number of outings.

Fint Scully is the current holder. Members of the society also have the opportunity of participating in All Ireland Hurlers events run by the Na hIománaithe Society.

They stage three outings, the highlight of the season an Inter County team event in early September.

Laois are the current holders of the trophy. Their opening outing, Eamon Cregan’s Captain’s Prize, takes place in Ballyneety G.C on Friday May 12.

A spokesperson said: “Whether its competitive golf you’re interested in or just a friendly round, why not take part and join the fun.

“If you wish to join, please contact Alex Stenson Tel: 0862570757 or Timmy Williams Tel: 0872885249, alternatively turn up on the day.

“You just need to have played Club hurling, but must be a current member of a golf club and hold a GUI handicap.

“Annual membership is €20 and each outing cost €20.”
